Things to consider

  • Longevity: Whether you get photos done every year or once in a blue moon, you'll want to make sure your photos are timeless and can be displayed years after. Take into consideration if your color scheme is a current trend that may be out of style soon or a look that will stand the test of time.
  • Location: the vibe of a location can help determine the best color scheme for your session. For beach photos, I recommend white and tan as it is timeless and can be as casual or formal as you want. For a grassy field, more loose fitting materials and pastel colors will compliment to care-free boho vibe.
  • Matching vs. Coordinating: matching exact colors and/or patterns is a great option if you are wanting a more formal vibe for your session. On the other hand, coordinating outfits in complementary colors or shades of the same color gives the freedom for each person to show their personality with their take on the color scheme. Mixing patterns and solids in the same color family is a great option as well.
  • Comfortability: This is huge factor, especially when littles are involved. Making sure your kids have comfortable shoes for walking and appropriate covering for the temperature will go a long way in making sure we keep happy kiddos from the start to finish of your session. Similarly, keeping the style and material close to what they are familiar with will help them feel they can be themselves.

Color guide by season:

Spring/Summer

Lighter shades, pastels and neutrals look best this time of year. Comfortable, flowy fabrics like linen are nice. For women, dresses and skirts are a great option and for men, you can add suspenders to khaki pants for a more formal look. Light floral prints, lace accents, and textured fabrics are a way to add movement and depth to your photos. If simplicity is your style, a plain white tee and jeans always looks great no matter the location.

Fall

Rich, earthy tones and soft neutrals. Think cream, chocolate brown, terracotta, mustard, olive. This color scheme gives the warm, cozy feeling that we associate with fall and it will complement the colors of the changing leaves. Can't go wrong with any color paired with denim and boots (either knee high or cowboy).

Winter

For a timeless look in the winter, your going to want to go with rich seasonal colors paired with soft neutrals. Oatmeal or taupe paired with bold jewel tones such as burgundy and navy or forrest green. Texture is always a fun way to give dimension so think cable knit sweaters or wool scarves.
